Top Ten Tuesday - Oh the feels!

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten books that gave me all the feels!

Heya!

Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday, brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish! Top Ten Tuesday (aka TTT) is a weekly blogger meme where you write lists of your top ten (insert topic here)!

This week’s theme is a freebie! There was so much to choose from! I thought about top 10 OTPs, but I want to do that one for the Valentine’s freebie ;) So I decided that I would do the top 10 books that gave me all the feels!

Are you ready for a feel-coaster? ‘Cus I’m not! XD

Alright let’s get this started!
Note: These aren’t in any specific order. They’re not even all bad feels! Just... emotions!

1. Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare
2. A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J Maas
3. The Fault in our Stars, by John Green
4. The Deathly Hallows, by J.K. Rowling
5. The Hunger Games (yes the whole series), by Suzanne Collins
6. Allegiant, by Veronica Roth
7. I am the Messenger, by Markus Zusak
8. The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak
9. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne

The Inn Between, by Marina Cohen

The Inn Between, by Marina Cohen

Hey all!
I just finished reading The Inn Between, by Marina Cohen!

I received this ARC from Netgalley - this does not change my opinion on the book. Thank you for providing it!

"Eleven-year-old Quinn has had some bad experiences lately. She was caught cheating in school, and then one day, her little sister Emma disappeared while walking home from school. She never returned

When Quinn's best friend Kara has to move away, she goes on one last trip with Kara and her family. They stop over at the first hotel they see, a Victorian inn that instantly gives Quinn the creeps, and she begins to notice strange things happening around them. When Kara's parents and then brother disappear without a trace, the girls are stranded in a hotel full of strange guests, hallways that twist back in on themselves, and a particularly nasty surprise lurking beneath the floorboards. Will the girls be able to solve the mystery of what happened to Kara's family before it's too late?

Yeah... ‘Creepy’ is a good way to put this book!

So Inn Between is about two best friends who are on a trip in the desert. They stop for the night at a hotel, and, in the morning, Kara’s family is missing. Things go in a downward spiral for the two friends after that.

I was not expecting it to be so creepy! I think that the dose of creepiness is perfect for middle grade, though. It somewhat reminded me of Coraline, although Coraline was creepy on another level!

The characters weren’t my favorite, but that’s okay, the book wasn’t about the characters themselves.

Quinn is suffering from the loss of her sister, making her seem paranoid at times. Kara is sweeter and more down-to earth.

I don’t want to spoil much, but I can say that the things that happen are really weird, but a good weird!

This book is very short - its easy to fly right through, and can be fun to read along with a sibling!

The end was a definite shock! I got pretty sad actually... I won’t say what it is though!!

I’m giving this a solid 3/5 :)

Hey! Just Another Bookish Talk

Just Another Bookish Talk

Including bookshelf talks, emails to authors, and re-read thoughts

Hey all!
So my dad and I actually talked a lot about books today, so I felt like doing a book talk with you guys! You can contribute your ideas by putting them in the comments!

~New bookshelf organisation~
Oh yeah! :D
The main part of my shelf didn’t change - all of my series are still beautifully packed together, different editions still awkwardly stick out.. .much is still the same.
BUT
My top two shelves were filled with both miscellaneous stand-alones and first books in series that I just never got to completing. Since no book went with another, I just took the time to organize them in color-order, from black to black (black, red, orange, yellow, green, silver, blue, purple, pink, white, grey, black). And now it’s so pretty! *-*

~I emailed an author, wish me luck!! ^_^~
Do you guys know Julie Bertagna? She wrote a book that I really like, Exodus. Her third book in the trilogy was advertised a LONG time ago, but I can’t find a place to buy it!
So I emailed her.
I felt like I could, because when I was in 7th grade, she came to my school in Luxembourg and did a book signing. (Like a 13-year-old idiot, I forgot my book at home ;_; )
Hopefully I’ll get an answer and a place to buy book 3 at! I did get it for my kindle but I’d love a paperback, cus the cover is pretty!
I also asked her if she would let me interview her for my blog! I’ll let you guys know how that plays out! :D I really hope it does!!

~Bookstagram~
I’ve actually been LOVING bookstagramming! It’s just hard to do because the lighting in my room is very meh, and the only time sunlight comes through my windows is early morning...

~Passenger~
I recently got Passenger, which is one of my most anticipated releases of the year! :D Hopefully I’ll get to it soon!

~Anticipated but never picked up?~
You guys know EXACTLY what I mean, I know you do. Basically, you wait for a book throughout the whole year, you get it, but you are too taken up in another series or genre to pick it up just yet. The, you have the book for months, and you still haven’t read it (cough TROUJLH cough). This also goes with ARCs from Netgalley. I went on a Netgalley splurge a few months back, and now I have a bunch of ARCs to read!

~Book hangovers~
Clockwork Princess, still...
That’s all I’m gonna say.

~Re-reads~
So. Re-reads.
I definitely want to organize another reading, like the Percy Jackson one Erica and I did in October! Maybe with Graceling? That could be nice :)

Anyway, re-reads are peculiar but awesome. You remember why you loved a certain book or series, and you get to pick up on stuff that you didn’t notice in your first read.

For example, I read the giver in 5th and 6th grade. Both of those times, I had never noticed that their world was essentially in black and white - they had no color. Then, the protagonist sees an apple change, ie. turn red. I only noticed that when I re-read it last year!

~Superintelligence~
So for my course at uni I had to read a book called Superintelligence, and I have to review it. But I can’t just review it like I would review a YA fiction book. I need an ‘angle of telling’, and I don’t get what that means ;-; I did ask about it, but I still don’t really get it. It’s a 2000 word review that needs to be handed in in a bit over a week. This should be interesting to write!

~Uni~
Real classes start again next week Monday. I will have less time to read, and hence will probably post less. I’m still here though! I’ll be taking Chemistry for the Future, which looks absolutely amazing, The Future of Literature, which looks intriguing, and Italian for my skills course. :)

Anyway, make sure to write down any reactions in the comments, I’d love to chat with you guys about this stuff!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Books I want to re-read this year

Books I want to Re-read this year

Hey all!

So yesterday, two of my favorite booktubers, JesseTheReader and PeruseProject, published videos listing books they wanted to re-read this year. I’ve actually been wanting to re-read some books as well, so here we go, here are the books I want to re-read this year!

1. The Heroes of Olympus Series

I just recieved the Blood of Olympus! But, I read each book as they came out, so I don’t remember much. ._. That calls for a re-read!

2. The City of Ember

I haven’t read this in a few years. This is a middle-grade quartet about a futuristic society. The first book came out as a movie quite a while ago. I can’t remember if I liked it or not, hence the re-read! They’re all really short.

3. The Bartimaeus Trilogy

I read the 1st book in 8th grade, and can’t remember if I liked it or not! I have the whole trilogy, so I want to re-read book 1 and read the rest :)

4. The Mortal Instruments series

I just finished the Infernal Devices, so I want to re-read TMI. Also, Clare’s new series is coming out! 2016 - the year of the Shadowhunters!! (Oh btw I have a series-review coming up later :) )

5. An Ember in the Ashes

I just want to re-read this before A Torch Against the Night comes out!!!

6. Graceling

Aren’t these books beautiful? o.o
I love this series, and I just want to re-read them for fun. Actually, this would be a fun read-along, what do you think?! :D

7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Okay technically this isn’t totally a re-read as this is the illustrated version which I haven’t read yet, but I still know the story!

8. Magyk (Septimus Heap #1)

Okay I want to re-read these, even though I’ve only read the first one and only own the first 3. Also, these covers are so beautiful! *-*

That’s all of the books I’d like to re-read this year! Which ones would you like to delve back into? Let me know in the comments! :D

Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare

Hey all!
I just finished reading Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare (Jem <3)

...

I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT!

Note: This review will be filled with all my feels. Because that’s what this book was. A 570-page-long book of crushing feels.

Backcover Blurb:
“A net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. Mortmain plans to use his Infernal Devices, an army of pitiless automatons, to destroy the Shadowhunters. He needs only one last item to complete his plan: Tessa Gray.

Charlotte Branwell, head of the London Institute, is desperate to find Mortmain before he strikes. But when Mortmain abducts Tessa, the boys who lay equal claim to her heat, Jema dn Will, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever.

As those who love Tessa rally to rescue her from Mortmain’s clutches, Tessa realizes that the only person who can save her is herself. But can a single girl, even one who can command the power of the angels, face down an entire army?”

Okay okay so:

Because the list is long.

This book was the last book of Cassandra Clare’s ‘Infernal Devices' trilogy.  And it was perfect.
This follows the story in which Mortmain has created this crazy clockwork army to basically make things go south.

Tessa gets kidnapped, and... stuff happens.

BASICALLY if you haven’t read this series, or the last book, STOP READING NOW! Spoiler section starts here and goes all the way through. Have an awesome day!

So sorry guys, this won’t be a traditional review. It’s the last book of a series. It will basically be a long list of “And that part when...!”’s . ^-^

So the book starts off with Jem and Tessa figuring out their wedding. Everything’s going well, people are happy...

And then Jem almost runs out of Yin Fen, and there’s no more in London. Meaning, unless a cure is found, he will die very quickly.
Already that made me be like ‘nah, they’ll find something. They’d better.’

And that’s when the roller coaster of feels starts at full speed. Basically everything after that point is just amazing and beautiful.

0. That part when Jem plays violin for Tessa.
I already thought Jem was amazing, and that Jessa was amazing. That’s not the point. This whole scene was perfect yet crushing. Just Jem writing something like that for Tessa, knowing he might not make it to the next week..!

1. That part when Jem and Will talk about Tessa, and Jem tells will to go after her because he’s dying.
Okay, this was the first part that gave me all the feels. If you follow me on instagram, a few days ago I put a picture with the definition of a “feelsplosion”. The picture I took was from this part, just because of the whole scene. These two friends, brothers of sorts, love each others so much that they both accept that the other one loves the same girl he does. I thought it was so cute when they were both kinda awkwardly going “I’ll step away, no I will...”. And then when Jem asks Will to leave to find Tessa, and Will does it for him, even though he knows Jem might die before they’re back, but he’s doing it anyway out of honor for his parabati... by the angel, I almost cried. Because it wasn’t really about them and Tessa. It was about them being something more than brothers.

2. That part when Tessa finds out that Mrs. Black is just a head on a spike.
I must admit, I laughed pretty hard! XD It was all like ‘wait what you’re alive..?” “Nope sorry look again!” and then Tessa freaked out and threw herself out of the moving chariot!

3. That part when Magnus says “This powder would make my very skin glimmer for eternity.”
Magnus is all things awesome. He’s one of my favorite characters in the whole Downworld. When he’s so fascinated by making his skin glittery I couldn’t help but laugh.

4. That part when Tessa’s angel saved her from falling off the cliff.
THAT WAS SO EPIC! She was falling, then her necklace just grows and catches her before she can hurt herself, and I thought that that brought out the awesomeness of the series again. That huge magical world that Clare built had an awesomeness explosion right then!

5. That part when Will find’s Jessa’s bridal gift by the river.
;-;

6. That part when Jem finishes the yin fen, and tells Charlotte to stop looking for a cure for him.
The only thing that caused me not to sob was the fact that I was in the living room, where we were watching a HILARIOUS game show while I was reading this. I couldn’t laugh, but couldn’t cry either. Merci, Vendredi Tout Est Permi!
This. Crushed. Me. Hopefully you know by now that Jem is probably my new book bae. <3
And then I read that
And then I (almost) cried. (Thanks TV)
But I was not okay. The whole scene with Jem and Charlotte, where they talk about simple happy things was so sweet. And then he drops the ‘Let me die’ bomb.
This was another feelsplosion. I could barely contain it.

7. That part when Will does that thing where he cut himself with Jem’s knife, to have ‘their’ place, as a final honor. AKA that part where Jem dies and I cry.
Not okay... ;_;
Another strong parabati part of the book that I thought was amazing. But so. incredibly. crushing.

8. That part when Gideon just super casually mentions getting married to Sophie, by accident.
Laughed at that. So clumsy but so cute!

9. That part when Tessa’s clockwork angel marks Will with the famous ‘Herondale Star”.
AW YEAH NOW WE KNOW WHERE THE STAR’S FROM!
But it’s weird to think of Jace as Will and Tessa's great-grandson or something... o.o

10. That part when JEM’S A SILENT BROTHER?! HE’S ALIVE?!
Reading that, I gaped like a fish. Jem? Alive? And Will and Tessa are both like ‘what’re you doing here? What? How?’.
I was happy c:

11. That part when Tessa shape-shifts into her Angel.
ANOTHER MOMENT OF EPICNESS! That was so so awesome! She literally searched for her Angel’s essence, shape-shifted into him, crushed Mortmain into jelly, and destroyed the clockwork army.

12. That part when Will dies.
The last time I cried real tears was when reading The Fault in our Stars. (TFIOS had me crying for longer though, I couldn’t stop ;_;). Just the whole way Tessa was describing his last days, where Jem played for him, when nothing else could be done, how she had lived with him and the others until the last day... It reminded me of when (spoiler) Tris died in Allegiant and Tobias had to deal with it.
NO I’M TEARING UP JUST WRITING THIS! STAHP, ME!

13. That part when Jem meets her again.
He’s alive, he’s ‘mortal’ again, and he’s not dying anymore. It’s 2008. And it’s beautiful.

14. That part when I realized I finished the book
“But... but I don’t want to be done...”

CASSANDRA CLARE I’M WAITING FOR LADY MIDNIGHT! I’d do anything for an ARC of it!

Okay now other remarks.

I DON’T HAVE A TEAM! I love Jessa and Wessa almost equally, even though I lean towards Jessa. When she married Will I was like aw nice! But then when she meets Jem all those years later and they end up together I was like SHE ENDS UP WITH BOTH! HOW AMAZINGLY PERFECT!?
They were both endgame and there was no choice to be made and that made me so happy!

This book is definitely making my ‘top finales’ list. Wow it was good! Clare’s writing is simply magical, and easy to read, but gives so much emotion! All of the characters are always so different but so amazing! They stick with you, as does the story. The series as a whole was beautifully concise and was never dull.

Oh yeah. Jem is bae for me. I know a lot of people like Will, but I don’t know what it is about Jem that I like so much. He’s so sweet and caring and selfless.

I don’t know if I like TID or TMI better...  FANGIRL PROBLEMS EH?!

10/10, 100/100, epic/epic!  Now I gotta get out of a post-awesome-book slump.

Did you read Clockwork Princess? What did you think? Let me know!

New Tag! - Bookish Siblings Tag

Bookish Siblings Tag! (ORIGINAL!)

Hey all!
I was on Instagram today and I was nominated to show off the books that have my ‘top 5 fictional guys’. I’ve done the ‘book boyfriend tag’. Many tags are asking about a favorite male character.

But I noticed, there’s not much on what I would call a ‘book brother’ or ‘sister’.

I mean, come on, who has never read a book and though ‘Wow I’m sure I’m related to this character!” rather than “oooooh niiice ;)” ? I know I did!

So without further ado, I sat down and created this tag.

Rules
1. Answer all the questions. Repetitions are absolutely fine :)
2. You can put yourself in any of the categories!
3. Tag others!
4. Fill in the categories with bookish characters! These characters don’t have to feel sibbling-esque. If you don’t know, you can say, for example. “A character that... I can’t stand is ___”

1. Your older brother
I’ve said this before, but Percy Jackson is my older book brother.

2. Your younger brother
Jonas from The Giver.

3. Your sister
Hmm maybe Laurel from Wings, actually!

4. The popular one
Isabelle from The Mortal Instruments.

5. Parent’s favorite
Quentin from Paper Towns.

6. The little rebel
Celaena from Throne of Glass. Yep.

7. Your twin
OOh that’s hard! I’ll say Simon from The Mortal Instruments. We could play D&D, we’re both awkward.

8. The one you can’t stand
Draco from Harry Potter.

9. The one you could prank the world with.
Fred and George from Harry Potter!

10. The shy introvert
Oh, hi there Caroline. Yeah, it’s me...

11. Your ultimate book sibling
I gotta give this one to Percy Jackson

12. Your blogging sibling
It’s hard to choose one, but I want to say Erika @ Books, Stars, and the pages in between. C:

Tags!
Erika @ Books, Stars, And the Pages in Between
Carrie @ The Book Goddess
Less Reality, More Books
Sam Frost @ Tsundoku Books
Aeriko @ The Reading Armchair
Megan @ Books of Fascination

And of course, feel free to do it! :D I hope you enjoy it! :)

Have an amazing day! <3

The Blogging World

The Blogging World

Hey all!
This post is really spontaneous, but it’s covering things that I’ve been thinking about since I started blogging.

Some of you may know, I started this blog more as a personal ‘book log’. I’ve been keeping a list of books I read each year since 2011. I was looking at the list and realized that I forgot that I read some books... does that sound weird?

Anyway, I noticed that and told myself that I wanted to take more time to read an enjoy books. It’s not about how many books I read in a year anymore, but more something like this, which I saw in one of my classes:

“In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.” ~ Mortimer Adler

And, for me, the best way to do that was to take more time to read less books, and to write about them.

So I opened a blogger page, and came up with a super duper extra creative name! (...ha...) At first, I didn’t know there were so many people who were also reviewing books out there. I thought that other authors mostly did that (the authors quoted on the covers of some books? Yeah them).

Basically, a whole world of books and writing opened up to me.

Now, I’m not a writer. I mean sure, I like it, I came up with a few cute stories throughout upper school that I wish I could elaborate on, I like writing reviews. And I might be good at it? I don’t even know!

I’m. A. Science. Student! I study chemistry and sustainability, with some biology.

So yeah writing’s not my strongest point!

Where was I... Oh yeah!

I started my blog, and I just thought it was the coolest thing! And I still think that!

I freaked out with my first comment. I was in the inner city bookstore, checking my e-mails in front of the YA book section, saw the email saying that someone commented. And then I kinda went crazy. I mean I probably got red, and I remember getting shaky and excited and all sorts of weird. And this was that comment:

"I just wanted to say I like your blog! I'm going to follow you, please follow me back as well www.sweetcherry69.blogspot.com I also have a book blog :)

(BTW guys Carrie, the one who posted this, has a really great blog, go check it out, will ya? :) )

And the next comment was about me getting nominated for the Liebster Award.
I must admit, when I saw something with such a fancy name, I freaked out EVEN MORE. I thought I was gonna get a certificate or a prize, and there would be confetti, and, again, all sorts of crazy things.

That’s when I kinda dove deeper into the blogging world. I looked up the super-mythical “Liebster Award” and found out that it was more of a tag! I filled it out happily, discovering other blogs in the process.

I started developing my reviews. It went from short little paragraphs to more elaborate pieces (especially about characters, you guys know how much I love the characters!), to having a new rating system, to something much more structured.

I found the world of booktubing, tags, read-alongs, book memes... I didn’t know any of that existed before I started blogging! (Well that’s not totally true for booktubing. In case you are curious, 3 of my favorite booktubers are Jessethereader, Abookutopia, and Peruseproject.)

I also discovered so many books. I mean SO. MANY. Thanks for introducing me to things like Throne of Glass, Across the Universe, a bunch of stand-alone books, contemporary books, Miss Peregrine, and so many other fabulous books out there that I add to my wish list all the time!

Now, blogging is one of my hobbies. I love Top Ten Tuesdays, I love finishing a book and having a whole list in my mind about what to write about, i love talking bookish with you guys!

And you guys are a huge part of this. This is still a tiny fleck of a blog in the whole world of them, but, for me, that is perfect :) I can’t thank you guys enough!

Well... I guess that one thing that’s more difficult is actually putting feels into words, especially when the book gives you so many feels that even your feels don’t understand your feels. You know what I mean? Like... a Feelsplosion.

Wow... surprisingly accurate!

Anyway, I hope you guys have an absolutely fabulous day, month, and year! May you find the next Harry Potter for you, may all your ships sail, and may the tides take you where they should :)

~Caroline~

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chobsky - SPOILERS!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chobsky

Hey all!
I just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chobsky. I’m not going to hide spoilers this time.

(Backcover Blurb)
Charlie’s not the biggest geek in high school, but he’s by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent, yet socially awkward, Charlie is a wallflower, standing on the threshold of his life whists watching everyone else live theirs. As Charlie tries to navigate his way through uncharted territory - the world of first dates and mix tapes, family dramas and new friends - he realizes that he can’t stay on the sidelines forever. There comes a time when you have to see what life looks like from the dance floor.”

I was really really really hoping to like this. I really was.
But honestly, I didn’t :(
And I really hate not liking books and writing more negative reviews ;-;

Okay so TPOBAW was from Charlie’s point of view - a 15-year-old teenager who is writing letters to you, as a ‘friend’. Through these letters, he basically gives you an overview of his freshmen year, telling you about his experiences.

I felt like the letters were written like a 10-year-old, by a 15-year-old, about college problems. (Well, the events like this only ever happened with the really popular kids at school. I was sorta a wallflower in high school, kinda, and the last thing I wanted to do was get involved with the populars.) He really was like a kid, constantly asking ‘why’ and doing things without an obvious purpose.

And he cries. A lot. For everything.

So basically the book starts off with him saying that his best friend killed himself, and he has to go to a psychiatrists. Then, the whole book feels like he’s just existing through everyday life in a state of shock.

What bothered me is his... un-reactiveness. I mean I know he’s having a hard time, and that his friends are all 18 who kind of drag him into a world of partying and smoking... but he just mentions thing almost... blandly. One part that really stuck out to me was when he just almost casually mentions that he witnessed a girl... being forced to do stuff that she obviously didn’t want to do. I dunno, that really bothered me. He didn’t feel like an introverted shy wallflower, in my opinion. And even when he learns how to ‘see life from the dance floor’, it doesn’t seem like he’s doing any better.

I feel like this book had too many serious topics crammed within the 200 pages. Seriously, the only thing missing was someone having HIV/AIDS or cancer, and that would have been everything. Abuse, alcohol, drugs, suicide, depression... you name it, and it was probably there. And none of these topics were more than mentioned. Just... no.

Of course this book was unique and unpredictable in many ways. I liked the characters that had many dimensions to them, like Sam and Patrick. I think that they really ‘saved’ the book for me. But I was really surprised when Sam left for college, and Charlie basically ended up so unresponsive and depressed that he ends up at the hospital for two weeks. It’s like he doesn’t have a backbone, and that Sam was what was holding him up after his friend died. But we know that that’s not the case, because he has other friends as well, and he was okay before he met her.

I don’t know, I feel like this book didn’t click with me for some reason. I understand the intent of having a somewhat depressed wallflower’s point of view,  but I personally would have enjoyed the story if it was just in regular prose, and in the 3rd person. I do understand why may people enjoyed this book so much! I just couldn’t ‘bond’ to it like many people could. Sure, some parts were adorable and moving, but I just felt like the book as a whole was a bit removed from everything. I guess that that is what was intended, as wallflowers are typically ‘removed’ from society.

I’m sadly giving this just 2 feathers.

Did you read the perks of being a wallflower? What did you think? Let me know! :D

(also yes, I realize this review isn’t great, I’m sorry!)

Top Ten Tuesday - Top 10 2016 Releases

Top Ten Tuesday - Top Ten 2016 Releases (Yes I’m 2 weeks late >.> )

Heya!

Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday, brought to you by The Broke and the Bookish! Top Ten Tuesday (aka TTT) is a weekly blogger meme where you write lists of your top ten (insert topic here)!

This week’s theme is the top ten books I’m looking forward to in 2016!

Okidokey let’s get this started!

1. Passenger, by Alexandra Bracken
2. The Trails of Apollo, by Rick Riordan
